Looking after the elderly, injured or infirm is never an easy task. Personally caring for someone requires time, patience, and most importantly, a certain character – strong, sympathetic, and caring. Personal support workers are different in their services in healthcare from doctors, nurses, and other regulated healthcare professions. They address the personal daily needs of a person who cannot do on their own personal care, for reasons related to age, injury, or illness.

With the growing rate of seniors in Canada today, personal support workers, are quickly growing in high demand. A 2013 estimate by Stats Canada showed that 15.3% of the Canadian population is 65 years or older. The numbers have soared significantly over the last several decades, especially as the baby-boomers are now reaching 65. In fact, the yearly average growth rate of seniors since July 2011 has been 4.2%, a big jump in comparison to the 2.8% average in the five years prior.

The role of a personal support worker is physically and psychologically demanding, but it is also rewarding, as they get to help people and can form close relationships with their charges. Their schedules are also more flexible than those of doctors, nurses, and therapists, especially when the support worker has their own family and personal obligations to meet. The duties of a personal support worker or home aide differ on a case-by-case basis, depending on how elderly, ailing or serious the disability. On the one hand, personal support may merely include buying groceries, going to the bank to settle some transaction or giving the person their timely medication, and you may come a few times a week at most.
